Choose Love Movement

Byron Union School District has adopted the Choose Love curriculum to support the Social and Emotional learning of our students.  Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) education has been shown to increase grades, attendance, and focus while reducing aggression, anxiety, substance abuse and other issues (“CASEL: What is SEL?”, 2016).  SEL builds skills including:

  • Self-Awareness- the ability to recognize and understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, impulses, physical cues, motivations, beliefs, and acknowledge their influence on behavior;

  • Self-Management- the ability to regulate and adapt one’s emotions, thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors in different situations;

  • Social Awareness- the ability to take multiple perspectives and empathize with others;

  • Relationship Skills- the ability to use communication skills and emotional intelligence to build healthy interpersonal relationships; and,

  • Responsible Decision Making- the ability to make ethical and safe decisions taking into account the consequences and well-being of others when making a decision.

Choose Love teaches these concepts through four focal areas.

Courage- working through obstacles despite feeling       fear, embarrassment, reluctance, or uncertainty.

Gratitude- being thankful even when things in life         are challenging.

Forgiveness- letting go of anger and resentment toward yourself or someone else, to surrendering thoughts of revenge, and moving forward with your personal power intact.

Compassion in Action- understanding the problem that another faces and to help find solutions to the problem.
