Dear Byron families,

I am writing to update you on the incident that occurred early this morning affecting schools across California, including our district and those around us. Earlier today, a mass-distributed email threatening to detonate a device later today was received by hundreds of schools throughout the state. We were also alerted by the Superintendent of the County Office of Education, Lynn Mackey, that this email threat was sent to districts all over the country. While no specific school or district was mentioned in the threat, I want to assure you that we took immediate action to secure all sites by contacting local authorities for support. Our site leaders and district team worked quickly with the County Sheriff to do a safety walk together at all campuses. Every school site was cleared by the law enforcement team. In addition, the FBI reviewed this email since it went nationwide, and it was deemed to be not credible which agrees with what our Sheriff stated earlier today.

Be assured that the safety and security of our students, staff, and community remain our utmost priority. We appreciate the cooperation and vigilance of everyone on staff in our school community during this time.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to our District Office if you have any concerns or questions.

Thank you for your continued support,

Crystal Castañeda
Superintendent
Byron Union School District
